The concept of a Weak Link
If you were to consider a piece of chain stretched to the point of breaking, you instinctively know it will always break at the weakest link, and that the weakest link in any piece of chain determines the strength of the entire chain.  

By finding and strengthening the weak link we can avoid the reasons so many undertakings have not prospered, and in many cases, have failed completely.


Managing holistically is about making financially sound decisions—that is, decisions that are simultaneously socially and ecologically sound, as well as monetarily sound.  Therefore we must look at all three areas, and test for the weak link from a social, ecological and financial viewpoint.


Weak Link - Social

—   Have I/we considered and/or addressed any confusion, anger or opposition this action could create in the near or distant future?
The future you describe in your holisticgoal comes about through the actions you take.  This test is designed to check whether an action you are contemplating is likely to either offend or confuse the people whose support you may or will need in the near (or even very distant) future. 

The people concerned are the ones you noted in your existing resource base when you first described your ‘economic whole’.
 

These are the people you'll need to protect and nurture relationships with, so that in turn they can support you.  In some ways it is a pretty self-centred approach you are taking, but at the same time it's utterly inclusive.

Be aware
Actions that challenge prevailing beliefs (also known as paradigms) are likely to be strongly resisted, creating blockages which must be addressed in order for you to move forward.  

Until your decision also includes a plan for clearing the blockage, you would fail this test if you suspected that implementing an action could result in other people either 1) Being hurt by your action; or 2) Taking active steps to block your progress.  The old adage holds well here: ‘An ounce of prevention is worth much more than the pounds of cure it takes to undo the problems conflict can generate.’


You would pass this test if there were no foreseeable obstacles to implementing the action.
